About

The Eucharistic Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was brought to Ukraine over one thousand years ago by Greek missionaries. The Liturgy has been a central part of Ukrainian religious life ever since. The continual celebration of this masterpiece of Christian spirituality has formed both the religious and artistic soul of the Ukrainian people. The singing of this Divine Liturgy draws us closer to God and to the deepest levels of human aspirations.

Founded in 1988, the Schola Cantorum (Latin for "School of singers") is a professional choir of men and women that draws on the rich traditions of Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony, as well as the new and challenging compositions of the 20th and 21 centuries.

James Michael Thompson is the founder of the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter the Apostle. In 988 he became the Director of Music Ministry at St. Peter's in the Loop in Chicago, Illinois. He held this post from 1988 to June 1999. Author, editor, composer of various works, he is well known in the midwestern United States for his choral and liturgical work.

Roman Hurko is a Canadian of Ukrainian descent. He was born in 1962 in Toronto and works primarily as an opera stage director. Besides this Liturgy, he has composed with Vito DeFillippo, an Ave Maria (1983), premiered by Robert Cooper, conductor of the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir.

He has also written the music for two plays: A Light from the East (1990) and Explosions (1992) with the Yara Arts Group at La Mama Experimental Theatre Club in New York City.

This Liturgy is sung in the Ukrainian Language and was composed to commemorate the Year 2000 Anno Domini.
