The first Ukrainian settlers started arriving in the early 1900s. In the beginning, there were 10 founding members with 20 children.

The church property was acquired in 1905, 6 km. west from the old train station Fedorah, near Bonaccord, approximately 40 km. from Edmonton. The church (40’ x 22’) was built in 1934-1936 for $1,175.00. There are also 2 acres for the cemetery.

In the early days, the Basilian Fathers served the community: Fr. Juvenalis Slota and others.

Ascension of our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church – Fedorah, AB

Photographs | Churches

This parish was established in 1912. The church is located on the Victoria Trail in Northern Alberta.

At one time part of the busy ferry crossing at Eldorena, the structure is typical of the second 'open domed' stage of Byzantine rite churches that developed throughout the rural communities of the Canadian prairies.

Its construction is significant in that it is thought to include some of the earliest work undertaken by the noted Prairie Byzantine church architect Reverend Philip Ruh immediately after his arrival in Canada.

The interior furnishings (tabernacle, side altar icons, altar room icons) are recognizable as the work of Peter Lipinski.

Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church – Eldorena, AB

Photographs | Churches

The church and the cemetery are situated on 10 acres of land. The church (20’ x 20’) was built in 1911-1912 by Mr. Halaychuk with a bigger dome in the centre and smaller ones in the front; a bell tower (dzvinytsia) was also built. The parish also owned a hall (60’ x 36’), worth approx. $2,500.00 in 1940. At that time there were 20 members. The Parish founders were: I. Himko (Khimko), D. Car (TSar) and L. Wynnyk.

In 1984 or shortly after, the parishioners closed the parish and joined the Parish in Stry.

Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church – Downing, AB

Photographs | Churches

Three acres of donated land at this location were incorporated as a church site in 1911. The church, designed in the shape of a cross, was constructed in 1917. Peter Lipinski painted the beautiful church interior in 1925.

Also inside are three altars, pews, icons, portable banners and many other sacred items. From the time the church was built to the present, church services have been held regularly at least once every month. A bell tower and cemetery are situated on the church property.

See HERE for more information on Peter Lipinski.
